In this guide I’ll share my recommendations for where to stay in Kazakhstan, based on my own trip and additional research.
In the big cities you’ll find international chains like Hilton, Rixos, and Novotel, alongside locally run hotels that meet good standards. Boutique hotels are rare, but the level of service is generally high, and rooms are spacious and well-equipped.
I’ll cover the best options in Almaty, Astana, Shymkent, and Turkistan, plus a few unique stays like yurts in the mountains.

Where to Stay in Almaty, Kazakhstan
As Kazakhstan’s largest city, Almaty has the widest choice of hotels in the country. Whether you’re looking for international luxury, modern mid-range, or budget-friendly hostels, you’ll find plenty of options here.
Almaty also makes the best base for day trips to Big Almaty Lake, Charyn Canyon, and the Kolsai Lakes.

This modern four-star hotel is located near Republic Square, making it a convenient choice for both sightseeing and business. Rooms are sleek and well equipped, with good city views from the higher floors.
You’ll appreciate the international service standards at Novotel Almaty City Center and the hotel’s proximity to shops, restaurants, and public transport.
NOMAD Хостел-Гостиница (Hostel Nomad)

For budget travellers, NOMAD Hostel-Gostinitsa is one of the best options in town. It offers clean, modern dorms and private rooms, plus handy extras like a shared kitchen, minimarket, and on-site coffee shop.
The staff are friendly and the hostel consistently scores high for cleanliness and comfort. It’s a little outside the very centre but well connected, making it a great value base for exploring Almaty.

Where to Stay in Astana, Kazakhstan
Kazakhstan’s futuristic capital is full of modern hotels, many of them catering to business travellers.
You won’t find much in the way of boutique or historic charm in Astana, but you will find reliable comfort, sleek design, and good service.
Most hotels are located either near the government quarter or around the EXPO site.
Hampton by Hilton Astana Triumphal Arch

This is where I stayed in Astana, and it turned out to be an excellent choice. The Hampton by Hilton Astana has comfortable rooms with modern amenities, a generous breakfast included, and friendly staff.
It’s located a short Yandex taxi ride away from the main attractions, so getting around is easy. For mid-range travellers, it strikes a great balance between quality and price.
The Ritz-Carlton Astana

Opulence, you own everything! And even if you don’t, for ultimate luxury, the Ritz-Carlton is the top address in the city. Located in the Esentai Tower, it offers sweeping views over Astana’s skyline, elegant rooms, and a spa with an indoor pool.
The restaurants and bar are some of the best in town. Perfect if you want five-star indulgence in Kazakhstan’s capital.
Hilton Astana

Next to the EXPO site, the Hilton Astana combines modern style with convenience. Rooms are spacious, with floor-to-ceiling windows that showcase Astana’s futuristic architecture.
Other travellers praise the spa facilities and on-site dining options. This is a great choice if you’re attending an event at EXPO or want to explore the Nur Alem Pavilion and Mega Silk Way Mall.
Inn OZZ Astana

A budget-friendly alternative to the big chains, Inn OZZ Astana offers modern rooms at very affordable rates.
It’s clean, comfortable, and well located, making it one of the best-value options in the city. Perfect for travellers who want to save on accommodation while still enjoying a pleasant stay.

Shymkent is Kazakhstan’s third-largest city and a lively hub in the south. It’s often used as a base for visiting Turkistan or exploring nearby national parks.
Hotels here are mostly modern, catering to both business and leisure travellers, with a mix of international chains and well-rated local options.
DoubleTree by Hilton Shymkent

I stayed at the DoubleTree by Hilton during my time in Shymkent, and it was excellent. The rooms are spacious and well designed, with super comfortable beds.

If you’re after luxury, the Rixos Khadisha is the best choice in town. This five-star hotel combines elegant rooms with spa facilities, a pool, and several restaurants.
It’s particularly popular among business travellers and those who want a high-end base while exploring southern Kazakhstan.

A solid mid-range hotel in the city centre, Aidana Plaza offers modern rooms with comfortable furnishings at reasonable rates. For a small extra fee you can use the on-site Aquapark
It’s close to shops and restaurants, making it convenient for exploring Shymkent on foot. Other travellers praise the friendly staff and the hotel’s value for money.

Where to Stay in Turkistan, Kazakhstan
Turkistan is one of Kazakhstan’s most historic cities, home to the UNESCO-listed Khoja Ahmad Yasawi Mausoleum.
Most travellers visit on a day trip from Shymkent, but staying overnight has its advantages — not least the chance to see the mausoleum beautifully illuminated after dark.
Accommodation options are limited compared to Almaty or Astana, but a few modern hotels make for a comfortable stay.
Hampton by Hilton Turkistan

The best-located hotel in the city, Hampton by Hilton Turkistan sits right next to the main sights. Rooms are modern, clean, and reliable, with everything you’d expect from the brand.
Breakfast is included, and the staff are known for their helpfulness. If you want convenience and comfort in one package, this is the top choice.
Even though I didn’t stay here I highly recommend this place for its hospitality. I had an emergency and they happily let me use their facilities, no further questions asked.
Rixos Turkistan

For those looking for luxury, the Rixos Turkistan offers five-star amenities with spacious rooms, a spa, and several restaurants.
It’s a great choice if you want to unwind after sightseeing, though it’s more of a splurge compared to other local options.
KARAVANSARAY Turkistan Family Hotel

Located within the Karavansaray cultural and entertainment complex, the Karavansaray Turkistan Family Hotel is a great mid-range option for families and travellers who want to stay right in the action.
Rooms are super comfortable, and being based here means you’re steps away from attractions like the golden egg theatre and Samruk shows.

Where to Stay in Aktau, Kazakhstan
Located on the Caspian Sea, Aktau is the main gateway to the Mangystau Region and the Ustyurt Plateau, which stretches into Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan.
Most travellers come here to explore Mangystau’s otherworldly landscapes. From colourful canyons to the famous Boszhira Valley.
Aktau itself is a functional city rather than a sightseeing destination, but it has decent accommodation for a comfortable base before and after your tour to Mangystau.
- Rixos Water World Aktau | A resort-style hotel right on the Caspian coast, perfect if you want a mix of comfort and relaxation.
- Holiday Inn Aktau | A reliable international option with sea views, modern rooms, and a good location in the city centre.
- Renaissance Aktau Hotel | Another solid international choice, with a pool and fitness centre, popular with both business and leisure travellers.
Most visitors use Aktau as a launchpad for guided tours into the Mangystau desert, so having a comfortable hotel to return to after long days of exploring is essential.
Unique Stays in Kazakhstan
While most accommodation in Kazakhstan comes in the form of modern hotels, you can also find a few more unusual stays that connect you with the country’s nomadic traditions and natural landscapes.
- Yurt Stays in Saty Village | Many tours to the Kolsai Lakes, Lake Kaindy, or Charyn Canyon include an overnight stay in a traditional yurt in Saty village. Facilities are simple, but it’s a memorable way to experience local hospitality and nomadic heritage.
- Homestays near Altyn Emel National Park | A handful of guesthouses and eco-lodges serve as bases for exploring the Singing Dune and Aktau Mountains. They’re rustic but perfectly located for early starts in the park.
- Countryside Guesthouses | In smaller towns and rural areas, you’ll find modest family-run guesthouses. Standards vary, but they’re good for travellers who want a more local experience.
These options aren’t luxurious, but they add a unique flavour to your trip and offer a side of Kazakhstan you won’t see in the big cities.
