Why Travel From Vilnius to Minsk by Bus?

The bus is the most reliable and affordable option for reaching Minsk from Lithuania, or even the European Union. Buses run daily, follow a direct route, and drop you right in the city centre.

The border can take time, but the process is organised and safe. Because cross-border trains are limited (only from Russia these days), buses are the preferred choice for travellers and locals alike.

Caution: There are ongoing tensions between Lithuania and the EU on one side, and Belarus on the other side. Inform yourself by reading the latest news and your government’s travel advice before deciding to visit Belarus.

Bus Companies Operating Between Vilnius and Minsk

Several companies run services on this route. The main ones are:

  • Ecolines | Latvian company with modern coaches, easy to use online booking platform, and clear communication.
  • Eurolines/TOKS | Lithuanian operator with multiple departures throughout the day. Newer coaches with comfortable seats, but communication could be improved.

Buses depart throughout the day and night, mostly without overlap, so you can choose departure times according to your schedule. For me that meant an Ecolines bus from Vilnius to Minsk, but a Eurolines/TOKS service on the way back.

Insider tip: If it’s more convenient, instead of boarding at Vilnius’ bus station, most services also depart from Vilnius (VNO) airport.

Top tip: Get your tickets on omio.com, where you can compare all departure times in one overview and book right away.

Vilnius to Minsk Journey Time: 6–7 Hours on Average

Although the distance from Vilnius to Minsk is only about 180 kilometres, the journey typically takes 6–7 hours. The longer duration is due to border formalities on both the Lithuanian and Belarusian sides.

Earlier in 2025 the trip could even take up to 12 hours. But since the number of services between the two capitals has been reduced, so has the time getting through the border checks.

Expect:

  • A smooth ride from Vilnius to the border
  • Passport controls on both sides
  • Passengers leaving the bus for checks
  • Possible waiting periods at busy times

Once you clear Belarusian immigration, the rest of the journey to Minsk is quick.

Border Formalities: What to Expect

The Lithuanian–Belarusian border is tightly controlled, but quite orderly on the Lithuanian side. It’s a little bit more chaotic on the Belarusian side, but don’t worry, as the bus won’t leave without you.

On the Lithuanian side

  • The bus stops at a checkpoint
  • You get off the bus and join the queue
  • Officers check passports
  • The process involves a lot of waiting time, since only one bus is handled at the same time

On the Belarusian side

  • You need to leave the bus again
  • Officers check passports, visas (if applicable), migration cards, and might ask you a few questions about your stay
  • Your bags will be scanned or inspected
  • Drivers and staff guide passengers clearly through each step

English on this journey from Vilnius to Minsk is spoken sparsely, especially on the Belarusian side, but procedures are straightforward and staff remain helpful. Although waiting times vary, the environment is calm and secure.

Visa and Entry Requirements

Entry rules depend on your nationality and current Belarus regulations. Always check the latest requirements before travelling.

You may need:

  1. A visa (some travellers qualify for visa-free entry)
  2. Travel medical insurance recognised by Belarusian authorities
  3. Money to cover each day of your stay

Your bus company may also request passport details when booking, and they will check your passport upon entering the bus.

1. Visa or Visa-Free

Find out whether you need a visa to enter Belarus or that you can enter Belarus visa-free. Even if you don’t need a visa, there could be limitations on where you can enter the country, such as land borders, or Minsk airport only.

You can watch this official video to quickly learn what’s applicable for you, and you can check wikipedia’s Visa Policy of Belarus.

European travellers

Most Europeans can travel visa free to Belarus for up to 30 days per stay (and up to 90 days in a calendar year. You can enter the country flying to Minsk (MSQ) airport, or using the land border on the way from Vilnius to Minsk.

This visa-free program is valid till December 31, 2026. Just bring your passport, proof of stay, sufficient funds (~€25 per day) and a medical insurance.

Note: This guide is based on my own personal experience and should not be treated as legal advice.

2. Medical Insurance

One of the requirements to enter Belarus is to have travel medical insurance. Because of sanctions you cannot obtain this from most western travel insurance companies.

However, you can simply buy this with your credit card online on this website before you travel from Vilnius to Minsk. It’s very cheap, since it only costs about €1 per day.

3. Money to Cover Your Stay

I brought a sufficient amount to cover for the duration of my stay in cash USD/EUR. The Belarusian authorities need you to have about €25 per day, so make sure you can proof this in case you get asked.

Arriving in Minsk

Buses from Vilnius arrive at Minsk Central Bus Station, right next to the main railway station. The location is very convenient if you’re staying near the centre.

From here, it’s easy to continue your journey:

  • Walk to nearby hotels (I stayed at the Hampton by Hilton, on the other side of the railway station)
  • Take the metro inside the train station (blue line or green line)
  • Order a Yandex taxi in the app

The railway station has shops, ATMs, cafés, exchange offices and luggage facilities if you need them.
