A Quick Introduction to Saint Lucia

Before diving into your one-day itinerary, let’s take a moment to get to know Saint Lucia, because this Caribbean island has a fascinating story to tell.

A History of Tug-of-War

Saint Lucia’s past is a story of power struggles and cultural influences. The island changed hands 14 times between France and Great Britain before finally becoming a British colony in 1814. This back-and-forth left a lasting impact. Simply take a look at all the French place names, while English is the official language.

Today, Saint Lucia is an independent nation and a member of the Commonwealth of Nations. British influence remains strong though, such as in its legal system, education, and love of cricket.

Saint Lucia Today: Culture, Economy & Everyday Life

Saint Lucia gained independence from Britain in 1979, but it still carries a blend of African, French, and British heritage. The island’s culture is vibrant, from its Creole traditions to its famous Saint Lucia Jazz Festival (usually held late April to early May; in 2025 from 30 April to 11 May).

Some interesting quick facts about Saint Lucia:

  • Currency | The official currency is the Eastern Caribbean Dollar (XCD), but US dollars are widely accepted. (1 USD ≈ 2.70 XCD)
  • Main industries | Tourism is king, but Saint Lucia also exports bananas, cacao, and coconuts
  • Geography | The island is volcanic, meaning stunning mountains, lush rainforests, and dramatic coastlines

Why Saint Lucia Feels So Special

What sets Saint Lucia apart from other Caribbean islands? It’s often called the most romantic island in the region, thanks to its dramatic landscapes, secluded beaches, and luxury resorts. But beyond that, it’s also a place of friendly locals, strong cultural traditions, and adventure around every corner.

Now that you know a little more about what makes Saint Lucia unique, let’s get into the best things to do on your cruise port day!

Must-See Highlights for Your Cruise Port Day in Saint Lucia

With just a few hours to explore, you’ll want to make every moment count. Saint Lucia is all about natural beauty, and luckily, many of its most iconic sights are within reach of the cruise port. Whether you’re up for a short hike, a refreshing waterfall stop, or a scenic coastal drive, here are the must-see highlights to fit into your day.

The Pitons & Tet Paul Nature Trail | The Ultimate Saint Lucia Experience

Before arriving in Saint Lucia, I asked my Instagram followers what I absolutely shouldn’t miss on the island. The response was unanimous: The Pitons! These iconic volcanic peaks – Gros Piton and Petit Piton – are the crown jewels of Saint Lucia. Needless to say they quickly became the highlight of our day.

While some adventurous travellers hike Gros Piton, that trek takes several hours and isn’t ideal for a cruise port stop. Instead, we opted for the Tet Paul Nature Trail, which turned out to be the perfect way to experience the Pitons without the intense climb.

Why Tet Paul is perfect for a cruise stop:

  • Short and scenic: A 45-minute roundtrip hike with incredible viewpoints
  • Unreal views: Multiple scenic stops overlooking the Pitons, lush valleys, and the Caribbean Sea
  • Great for all fitness levels: A well-maintained trail with informative guides sharing insights on local plants, history, and Creole traditions

Getting There | From Castries Cruise Terminal, it’s about a 1-hour drive to Tet Paul, so leaving early is key to maximizing your time. You can book a private driver or join a small-group tour that includes multiple stops.

I can confidently say my Instagram followers were right! The Pitons are an absolute must-see in Saint Lucia, and the Tet Paul Nature Trail made experiencing them easy, rewarding, and unforgettable.

Toraille Waterfall | A Quick Refreshing Stop

After soaking in the Piton views, make a quick detour to Toraille Waterfall, a 30-foot cascade surrounded by lush rainforest. It’s one of the easiest waterfalls to visit in Saint Lucia, just a 1-minute walk from the parking area.

Things to Know Before You Go:

  • The waterfall plunges into a natural pool, perfect for a quick dip
  • It can get crowded, especially when multiple tour groups arrive
  • There’s a small entrance fee (cash only), so have some EC dollars or USD on hand

Pro Tip: Look around! If you’re lucky, you might spot an iguana sunbathing nearby.

Lunch at The Old Mill | A Taste of Saint Lucian Creole Cuisine

After soaking in the breathtaking Piton views and hiking Tet Paul, we were ready for a delicious local meal. We headed to The Old Mill, a charming restaurant set in a historic sugarcane mill.

The food was delicious, featuring authentic Saint Lucian flavours like Creole stew, beans and plantain. But what truly made the experience special was the atmospheric setting. A beautifully restored sugar mill surrounded by rainforest made us feel like we had stepped back in time.

Marigot Bay | A Postcard-Perfect Stop

On your way back to the cruise port, take a moment to visit Marigot Bay, which is often called one of the most beautiful bays in the Caribbean. With swaying palm trees, luxury yachts, and emerald-green waters, it’s the perfect place for a relaxing drink before heading back to the ship.

The best way to experience Marigot Bay on your cruise’s port day in Saint Lucia is to head to a lookout point next to the Roots 2 restaurant. Here, you’ll find some unbeatable panoramic views and you can do some last minute shopping at the small souvenir stand.

Castries Market & Cathedral | A Quick Cultural Stop Before Boarding

If you have extra time before returning to the ship, take a quick walk through Castries Market. It’s lively, colourful, and packed with local vendors selling fresh produce, spices, and handmade crafts. If you want to bring home some Saint Lucian souvenirs, this is the place!

Right nearby, you’ll find the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, an impressive 19th-century church with vibrant murals and wooden details inside. It’s one of the largest churches in the Caribbean, and well worth a quick visit.

If you want to explore some more of Castries then head to Derek Walcott Square. Grab a Piton beer at The Balcony here overlooking the square, before returning back to the ship.

How to Get Around Saint Lucia from the Cruise Port

Saint Lucia is a stunning but mountainous island, meaning getting around takes a little planning. While Castries Cruise Terminal is centrally located, the island’s best sights – like the Pitons and Marigot Bay – are at least an hour’s drive away. Here’s the best ways to maximize your time.

Private Driver | The Best Balance of Flexibility and Comfort

Hiring a private driver is by far the best option if you want a stress free day. This way you can customise your Saint Lucia itinerary in any way you want. Of course, this comes at a price, but could work out cost effectively if you have your own small-group with family or friends.

How to book:

  • You can book a private driver in advance and arrange with them to pick you up at the cruise terminal at a confirmed time
  • Negotiate with licensed drivers at the cruise port (just confirm return timing!)

Small-Group Tour | Great for Convenience

If you prefer a guided experience on the island without the hassle of planning choose a small-group tour. It’s more affordable than a private driver and has a set itinerary with expert guides. No need to plan where you want to go, just hop-on and enjoy the island.

How to book:

Renting a Car in Saint Lucia | Only for the Adventurous

If you’re comfortable with winding roads, steep hills, and left-side driving you can also consider renting a car. Keep in mind also that traffic in Castries can be busy and hectic. But once you’re out of there it’s not too busy on the road anymore.

Another thing to consider is that the quality of the roads is terrible, especially on the way to Soufrière where most of the island’s highlights are located.

How to book:

Finally, if renting a car, make sure to select the airport in Castries (SLU) as pick-up location. This airport is situated only a short taxi ride away from the cruise terminal. Or once you’ve booked, arrange with them to meet you at the cruise terminal.

Taxis and Public Transport | Only for short trips, or don’t use at all

If you want to explore the island, then don’t rely on public transport, because schedules are unreliable and stops not where you want to go.

Taxi’s I would only use if you want to head to one specific place on the island. Otherwise they’re not really cost effective when compared to hiring a private driver or joining a small-group tour.

Is One Day in Saint Lucia Enough?

Saint Lucia is the kind of island that deserves more than just a few hours. With its dramatic landscapes, volcanic peaks, and postcard-perfect bays, it’s easy to see why people fall in love with this island. That said, with a well-planned itinerary, you can still experience some of its magic in just one day.

For us, the Tet Paul Nature Trail was the highlight, because it offered incredible Piton views without a tough climb. Marigot Bay gave us that quintessential Caribbean feel, and even though Toraille Falls felt a bit touristy, it was still worth a quick stop. Add in a delicious Creole lunch at The Old Mill, and we had the perfect mix of scenery, culture, and relaxation.

Would I come back to Saint Lucia? Absolutely! If I had more time, I’d love to explore the Sulphur Springs, snorkel at Anse Chastanet, or take a boat trip around the island. But even with just one cruise port day, I left feeling like I’d seen some of the best that Saint Lucia has to offer.

Final Thoughts

I hope to have given you a good idea on how to organise your cruise’s port day in Saint Lucia. We had a wonderful day on the island with the things that we did. I would plan it the same way again.
