Casa Hugo Review | A Perfect Stay in Fort-de-France, Martinique

When looking for a place to stay in Fort-de-France, we wanted a central location, a modern and comfortable space, and a welcoming atmosphere. Casa Hugo delivered all that and more.

In this article I’ll review our stay At Casa Hugo in Martinique’s capital Fort-de-France. Casa Hugo’s stylish apartments sit in the heart of Fort-de-France. Right above the fantastic Pâtisserie Hery (yes, fresh pastries every morning!). The hosts were incredibly kind and helpful, making us feel at home from the moment we arrived.

From the well-equipped kitchen to the thoughtful extras like a beach parasol and snorkel gear, Casa Hugo is perfect for travellers who want more than just a basic hotel room. And with easy street parking right in front, it’s surprisingly convenient for those renting a car.

That said, accessibility could be an issue for travelers with mobility challenges, as the apartment is located upstairs with no elevator. But for anyone looking for a charming, comfortable, and well-located stay in Martinique’s capital, Casa Hugo is an absolute gem.

Casa Hugo Review | Location & Accessibility

Right in the Heart of Fort-de-France

One of Casa Hugo’s biggest advantages is its prime location. Situated in the centre of Fort-de-France, it puts you within walking distance of the city’s best sights, restaurants, and markets. Whether you want to explore the Schoelcher Library, Saint-Louis Cathedral, or the lively Marché Couvert, everything is just a short stroll away.

For food lovers, the location couldn’t be better. Casa Hugo sits right above Pâtisserie Hery, one of the best pastry shops in town. Starting the day with freshly baked pain au chocolat and a cup of coffee quickly became our morning ritual.

Parking & Getting Around

While Fort-de-France can be challenging for drivers, Casa Hugo offers a huge bonus: street parking right in front of the entrance. We had no trouble finding a spot at any time, which made it super convenient for exploring the island by car.

For those relying on public transport, ferries to Trois-Îlets and Anse Mitan are just a 10-minute walk away. Buses also run from the city center, but to be honest, renting a car is the best way to explore Martinique beyond Fort-de-France.

Tip: Compare vehicles on booking.com and find the best car rental deal.

Accessibility Considerations

Casa Hugo is located on the upper floor of a historic building, which means no elevator. If you have mobility issues or heavy luggage, this could be a challenge. Although the hosts gladly help you with your luggage.

Other than that, the apartment itself is spacious, modern, and well-equipped, making it a fantastic base for most travellers.

Casa Hugo Review | Check-in & First Impressions

A Warm Welcome After a Long Journey

After picking up our rental car at the airport, we arrived at Casa Hugo, where our host was already waiting for us in the street. A thoughtful touch that immediately made us feel welcome.

He had even kept a parking spot open for us, which was much appreciated after a long-haul flight. Naturally, we had given him a heads-up via WhatsApp, and communication throughout our stay was just as smooth.

Walking into the apartment, the first thing we noticed was how spotless it was. The place was immaculately clean, with a modern yet inviting design that immediately made it feel like home.

A Thorough (but Slightly Lengthy) Introduction

Our host took the time to walk us through everything. Such as how to use the appliances and A/C, as well as local tips for restaurants and things to do in Fort-de-France.

It was a very thorough welcome, maybe even a bit long, but considering we had just arrived from an intercontinental flight, that was mostly due to our own exhaustion. That said, the explanation was extremely helpful, and we appreciated having all the details upfront rather than figuring things out later.

From the very start, Casa Hugo felt like more than just a place to sleep. The apartment was a well-designed, welcoming space that made our first nights in Martinique as comfortable as possible.

Casa Hugo Review | The Apartment

Spacious, Stylish, and Thoughtfully Designed

Walking up the narrow staircase to the apartment’s entrance, we had no idea just how spacious the inside would be. The layout is open and well-organised, creating a sense of airiness and comfort that you might not expect from a city-centre apartment.

Inside, the apartment is divided into three main sections:

  • A bright living area connected to the kitchen
  • Large bedroom with plenty of storage
  • Modern bathroom with thoughtful touches

Living Area, Kitchen & Balcony Views

The main living space felt modern, uncluttered, and inviting, with sleek decor and an eye for detail. One of the best features? The windows and doors opening up to a balcony overlooking the street. It was the perfect spot to take in Fort-de-France’s lively energy.

The kitchen was fully equipped with everything we needed. From sharp knives, cutlery, and a Nespresso machine to pots, bowls, and plates. Whether you’re staying for a couple of nights or longer, you won’t be missing any essentials.

The Bedroom: Comfortable & Well-Equipped

The bedroom was just as spacious as the rest of the apartment, featuring a large, comfortable bed with soft linens. The nightstands weren’t just decorative, but had handy phone-charging devices and a clock. These are small details that make a big difference.

Inside the closet, there was plenty of space to store luggage, but what really stood out were the handy extras. A beach parasol and snorkel gear, perfect for a day out by the sea. It’s small touches like these that make a place feel more than just a rental. Casa Hugo felt like a thoughtfully designed home-away-from-home.

The Bathroom: Simple, Modern & Functional

The bathroom followed the same modern, clean aesthetic as the rest of the apartment (the cat posters on the walls were a fun touch!). The shower cabin was sleek and practical. While the water pressure wasn’t as strong as what we’re used to at home, it was still perfectly fine. We appreciated the fluffy towels and the overall attention to detail.

Thoughtful Touches for a Comfortable Stay

What truly sets Casa Hugo apart though is the attention to detail. Every element in the apartment feels carefully considered, making it far more than just a place to sleep. Whether you’re here for a short city stay or a longer trip exploring Martinique, the apartment is equipped with everything you need.

A Fully Equipped Kitchen

If you like the option of preparing your own meals, Casa Hugo makes it easy. The kitchen comes fully stocked with:

  • Sharp knives & quality cutlery (always a plus in a rental!)
  • A Nespresso machine & kettle for your morning coffee or tea
  • Plenty of plates, bowls, cups & glasses
  • Pots & pans in case you want to cook
  • A dishwasher, microwave, and quite essential: a fridge!

Even though Fort-de-France has plenty of great dining options, having a fully functional kitchen is always a great bonus. And that’s especially true if you’re planning a longer stay.

Comfort & Convenience

From the moment we stepped inside, it was clear that comfort was a priority at Casa Hugo. The air conditioning worked perfectly for example, keeping the apartment cool and refreshing, which is essential in Martinique’s tropical climate.

Inside the closet, in addition to plenty of storage space, we found a few thoughtful extras:

  • A beach parasol | Perfect for shade at Plage des Salines
  • Snorkel gear | A great touch for exploring Martinique’s crystal-clear waters

Wi-Fi & Work-Friendly Setup at Casa Hugo

While we weren’t on a work trip, Casa Hugo’s Wi-Fi was fast and reliable. So that’s perfect for travellers who need to stay connected. The small desk area attached to the kitchen would make this a good option for digital nomads or anyone needing to get some work done while travelling.

Tip: Stay connected in Martinique by installing a Saily eSIM for the Caribbean. It includes pretty much all islands and is easy to top up with more data. Use code MARTIN84627 and get $5 off your first purchase.

Security & Accessibility

The entrance is very secure, with a front door to the complex, then a gate to access the staircase and then the door of the apartment. But keep in mind that there’s no elevator, so accessibility could be an issue for some travelers.

The apartment felt very safe, located in a quiet street in the city centre.

Casa Hugo Review | Nearby Dining

A Foodie’s Dream Location

One of the biggest perks of staying at Casa Hugo? You don’t have to go far for great food. In fact, one of the best pastry shops in Fort-de-France, Pâtisserie Hery, is right downstairs. This meant that freshly baked croissants and pain au chocolat became part of our morning routine.

Pâtisserie Hery: A Sweet Start to the Day

You can’t stay at Casa Hugo without indulging in Pâtisserie Hery. Whether you’re craving flaky, buttery pastries or a quick espresso before heading out, this place delivers on quality. We loved:

  • Their classic pain au chocolat. Crispy on the outside, soft and buttery inside
  • Their signature cakes & tarts, perfect for an afternoon treat
  • The hearty savoury pastries were a delight as well

Having a bakery this good just downstairs is the kind of luxury that makes a stay extra special.

Where to Eat Nearby

Fort-de-France has a great mix of Creole and French-inspired cuisine, and staying at Casa Hugo puts you within walking distance of some of the city’s best spots.

  • Chez Carole | Located in the Marché Couvert, this local spot serves delicious Creole dishes at great prices. Try the Colombo de Poulet (chicken curry) or grilled fish with plantains.
  • The Yellow | A trendy Caribbean-fusion restaurant with a focus on fresh, local ingredients. Their grilled octopus gets excellent reviews.
  • Garage Popular | A casual, artsy hangout with a great cocktail selection and a menu that blends French and Caribbean flavours.

Cooking in the Apartment? No Problem!

If you prefer to cook your own meals, the kitchen at Casa Hugo is fully equipped, and there’s two supermarkets within walking distance where you can pick up fresh produce. Keep in mind that meat is mostly frozen, so plan ahead if you want to eat some meat or chicken.
